Suspects Identified in Devbhog for Spreading Misleading Reports; Blackmail Attempt Exposed

Raipur/Gariaband : In a major crackdown on extortion attempts under the guise of journalism and activism, the Gariaband district administration has identified individuals from Devbhog who were allegedly involved in spreading misleading news reports and blackmailing a tribal department officer.
According to officials, despite repeated disclosures of departmental works through RTI queries, a group of self-styled media representatives and social activists allegedly conspired to blackmail the Assistant Commissioner by fabricating a complaint in the name of a Raipur-based lawyer to the Prime Minister’s Office. The false complaint was then circulated on social media in an attempt to malign the officer’s image.
Following the revelation, the district administration and a confidential police team launched an investigation, successfully identifying those behind the misleading reports. A formal complaint has also been lodged against the lawyer with the Chhattisgarh Bar Council’s disciplinary committee.
Authorities clarified that works under the education and tribal departments—such as repairs, renovations, and new constructions—were duly carried out through proper tender procedures and collector approval. However, the accused individuals allegedly sought to exploit these works as a pretext for blackmail, demanding money through intimidation.
The matter is now under active investigation, and officials have assured strict action against those attempting to misuse media platforms for extortion and fearmongering.
