Rail project in Raigarh region to streamline coal supply and ease road traffic

Infrastructure initiative expected to reduce pollution and support expanding power generation capacity

Raigarh : A rail infrastructure project aimed at ensuring efficient coal transportation to a thermal power plant in Raigarh district is currently under implementation. The project is being developed in the Chhote Bhandar area of Pusaur tehsil to support the growing fuel requirements of the power facility.

The plant is presently generating 600 MW of electricity, while construction work is underway for an additional capacity of 2×800 MW. In view of the increasing demand for coal, the rail corridor is being developed to establish a reliable and continuous supply chain for fuel.

The proposed railway line will begin at Kirodimal and pass through several villages, including Muralipali, Uchchabhitti, Kashichua, Gejmuda, Banhar, Baghanpur, Jampali, Usraot, Balmagonda, Kurmapali, Gorra, Raitarai, Bulaki, Basanpali, Ruchida, Shankarpali, Pusalda, Kotmara and Bade Bhandar, before reaching the plant site. Construction activities across these villages are currently underway at various stages.

Land acquisition status

Land acquisition for the project has been completed in 20 villages in accordance with government norms and prescribed compensation rates. Landowners in 18 villages accepted compensation, enabling the project to progress smoothly.

In the remaining two villages, however, some landowners sought compensation higher than the notified rates, resulting in temporary disruptions. The matter was addressed by the administration through due legal and procedural measures. Following necessary intervention, work related to the project has resumed.

Transport and environmental considerations

At present, coal is transported primarily by road, leading to increased movement of heavy vehicles in the region. The introduction of rail transport is expected to significantly reduce pressure on road infrastructure, lower dust pollution, and minimise risks associated with road accidents.

The shift is also being seen as an environmentally beneficial step, contributing to cleaner and safer transportation of coal over the long term.

Overall outlook

The rail project is being viewed as a crucial infrastructure development linked to the regionโ€™s energy supply system. It is expected to ensure uninterrupted power generation, improve logistics efficiency, and contribute to local development.

Authorities have indicated that the project is progressing in line with administrative procedures and legal provisions, with efforts ongoing to resolve remaining issues and complete the work within a reasonable timeframe.
