
The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Raipur witnessed a high-energy start to its annual sports festival, ‘SAMAR 2026’ today. Organized by the institute’s sports committee, Team Shaurya, the four-day sporting “Mahakumbh” aims to foster sportsmanship, discipline, and team spirit among the youth through a variety of competitive events.
The inaugural ceremony was graced by Dr. N.V. Ramana Rao, Director of NIT Raipur, as the Chief Guest, alongside Dr. Narendra D. Londhe, Registrar, as the Guest of Honour. Other dignitaries present included Dr. P.Y. Dhekne (Dean, Student Welfare i/c) and Dr. R. Suresh Kumar (Faculty In-Charge, Shaurya Committee). The event commenced with a traditional Saraswati Vandana followed by a brief introduction to SAMAR, setting an enthusiastic tone for the days ahead.
In his address, Director Prof. Rao emphasized the institute’s commitment to sports as a pillar of holistic development. He noted that physical activities not only boost mental and physical health but also enhance academic excellence by acting as a powerful stress buster. Highlighting the ongoing upgrades to the institute’s sports infrastructure, he encouraged students to participate in large numbers. The ceremony reached its peak when Prof. Rao officially declared the meet open by lighting the traditional torch.
Dr. P.Y. Dhekne delivered an inspiring speech, stating that he sees the participants not just as athletes, but as the “future responsible citizens and young leaders of India.” He remarked that sports teach invaluable life lessons such as handling pressure and maintaining composure in stressful situations. Registrar Dr. Londhe extended his congratulations to Team Shaurya on the auspicious occasion of Vasant Panchami, noting that the festival serves as a bridge to inspire and collaborate with participants from other colleges.
The four-day festival will feature a wide array of sports, including Cricket, Football, Badminton, Volleyball, Handball, Kho-Kho, Table Tennis, Kabaddi, and Basketball. With participation from NIT Raipur students as well as athletes from various other institutions, SAMAR 2026 is set to be a significant milestone in promoting a vibrant sports culture in the region.
