Over 2,400 health camps conducted; more than 40,000 patients benefited under PM-JANMAN
Raipur : In a major step towards strengthening rural and accessible healthcare, Mobile Medical Units (MMUs) operating under the Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan (PM-JANMAN) have significantly improved healthcare delivery in the remote and Left-Wing Extremism–affected regions of Chhattisgarh. So far, more than 2,400 medical camps have been successfully organised across the state, benefiting over 40,000 patients.
The Project Director of the PM-JANMAN project, Chetan Sharma, stated that these mobile healthcare services have played a crucial role in reaching populations living in inaccessible and forested regions. Through fully equipped ambulance-based medical units, patients are receiving timely treatment, diagnosis, and medical counselling at their doorsteps.

Hospital on Wheels: A Lifeline for Remote Communities
According to Sharma, the MMUs function as “hospitals on wheels”, staffed by 57 MBBS doctors, an equal number of nurses, and trained laboratory technicians. These medical teams address a wide spectrum of health issues ranging from seasonal illnesses to chronic diseases.
Each MMU is equipped with modern medical infrastructure and provides facilities for around 25 types of laboratory tests, enabling early diagnosis and timely treatment. These services have proved to be a major support system, especially for Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs), who often lack access to fixed healthcare institutions.
Diseases and Conditions Treated
The Mobile Medical Units are primarily treating:
- Skin diseases: Ringworm, scabies, bacterial vaginosis, yeast infection, trichomoniasis, etc.
- Non-communicable diseases (NCDs): Hypertension (high blood pressure), diabetes
- Infectious diseases: Viral fever, typhoid, and other common infections
Maternal, Child and Reproductive Health Services
In addition to general healthcare, MMUs are providing comprehensive services in:
- Reproductive and Child Health (RCH)
- Maternal care and antenatal services
- Identification and referral of high-risk pregnancies
- Post-natal check-ups
- Child health services, including:
- Malnutrition screening and counselling
- Treatment of childhood illnesses such as diarrhoea, ARI/pneumonia, asthma, and measles-related complications

Focus on Most Inaccessible Regions
The project has strategically targeted the most remote, tribal-dominated, and sensitive areas to ensure inclusive healthcare access. The covered regions include:
- Narayanpur and Orchha
- Bade Rajpur (Kondagaon)
- Kusmi and Shankargarh (Balrampur)
- Antagarh and Bhanupratappur (Kanker)
- Bodla (Kabirdham)
- Mainpur, Devbhog and Chhura (Gariaband)
- Nagri (Dhamtari)
- Pali and Poudi Uproda (Korba)
- Gaurela (GPM)
- Pithora

Ensuring “Healthcare for All”
Project officials emphasised that the primary objective of the MMUs is to ensure that no citizen is deprived of basic healthcare services due to geographical isolation or socio-economic barriers. By directly reaching villages that lack road connectivity and permanent health infrastructure, the initiative is transforming the healthcare landscape in tribal and remote Chhattisgarh.
This initiative under PM-JANMAN stands as a model of inclusive governance, grassroots healthcare delivery, and tribal welfare, reinforcing the government’s commitment to universal health coverage and social equity.
