JSW GreenTech plans ₹2,000 crore initial investment and aims to build capacity for 1 lakh electric commercial vehicles by 2030
Mumbai: The JSW Group is making a major push into the electric commercial vehicle (ECV) market, targeting capacity to produce 1 lakh electric commercial vehicles by 2030. The group has launched its new electric commercial vehicle brand, Ampestar, under JSW GreenTech.

The company plans to manufacture electric trucks and buses under the new brand. Its initial investment is estimated at around ₹2,000 crore, comprising approximately ₹1,500 crore in debt and ₹500 crore in equity from the parent group.
First plant coming up in Maharashtra
JSW GreenTech is developing its first manufacturing facility across 90 acres in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra. The plant will have an initial annual production capacity of 15,000 vehicles, including 10,000 electric buses and 5,000 electric trucks.
The company plans to begin its electric truck portfolio with a 55-tonne heavy tractor-trailer, followed by tipper trucks, fixed-body trucks and dumpers.
JSW Group said the Maharashtra facility is only the beginning of its broader electric commercial vehicle expansion, with the company working towards its 2030 production target.
Sajjan Jindal expects rapid growth in electric commercial vehicles
JSW Group Chairman Sajjan Jindal said electric commercial vehicles, particularly heavy trucks, could see rapid adoption because of their potential operating-cost advantages.
Jindal said the company wants Ampestar to contribute to transforming India’s transportation sector. However, he acknowledged that the pace of adoption would ultimately depend on the economics of fleet operations.
He emphasised that fleet operators would make purchasing decisions based on financial considerations rather than sentiment.
“The decision will be based not on emotions but on profitability and economics.”
JSW also preparing for passenger vehicle entry
The group’s automotive ambitions extend beyond commercial vehicles. After its partnership with MG Motor in the passenger vehicle segment, JSW is also preparing to introduce a car under its own brand by the end of this year.
The launch of Ampestar marks another step in JSW’s strategy to expand its presence in India’s rapidly developing electric mobility ecosystem, with commercial vehicles emerging as a key area of focus.
