Raipur । The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Raipur celebrated National Mathematics Day on December 7-8, 2024, as a tribute to the legendary mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. This grand event, organized in collaboration with the Chhattisgarh Council of Science & Technology (CCOST), witnessed enthusiastic participation from students and faculty members representing schools and colleges across Chhattisgarh. The celebration commenced with an inaugural ceremony led by Dr. A.B. Soni, Director (i/c) of NIT Raipur. In her inspiring address, Dr. Soni highlighted the pivotal role mathematics plays in everyday life and its profound applications across a multitude of fields, ranging from technology to the sciences. The event was further graced by the presence of Dr. Shrish Verma, Dean Academics, and Dr. Debasisha Mishra, Head of the Department of Mathematics, who attended as Guests of Honour.

The event’s success was credited to the dedicated efforts of Dr. Debasisha Mishra, Dr. Rajesh Doriya, Dr. Neeraj Manhas, and Dr. Ranjan Kumar Das, who worked alongside the faculty of the Department of Mathematics to make the occasion memorable. Highlights of the Celebration The two-day event was packed with a variety of engaging competitions and interactive sessions that aimed to inspire and nurture the mathematical talents of participants. Among the notable highlights, Fun with Puzzles for grades 6 to 9 saw Vedansh Agrawal securing the first position, followed by Shiksha Lawankar and Aadya Agrawal. In the senior category (grades 10 to 12), Keshab Agrawal emerged as the winner, with Sikandar Kanungo as the runner-up. The Project Presentation competition showcased innovative ideas, with Lukita Deshmukh and Jaahnavi clinching the top spot, followed by Omkeswar Sinha and Aayush Turkar. The Poster Presentation competition encouraged participants to blend creativity with mathematical concepts, with Kritesh Dhanuka taking the first prize. Alongside these, several other exciting events, including quizzes, painting competitions, and doodling sessions, were organized, which saw enthusiastic participation from students and added vibrancy to the celebrations. Inspiring Keynote Sessions One of the most anticipated segments of the event was the series of keynote sessions, where esteemed speakers captivated the audience with their expertise and insights. Dr. Ram Murty, Professor at Queen’s University, Canada, delivered an illuminating lecture titled “The Integral That Changed the World,” showcasing the profound impact of a single mathematical equation on global mathematics and its practical applications. Dr. Jitendra Kumar Rout from NIT Raipur presented a session on “Introduction to Machine Learning,” offering students a glimpse into the exciting world of artificial intelligence and its diverse applications. Dr. Rajat Kousik engaged the audience with his talk on “Innovative Teaching Methodologies,” demonstrating how artificial intelligence and modern tools can revolutionize learning, making it more effective, engaging, and fun for both students and educators. Dr. Kamal Raj Pardasani, Professor at MANIT Bhopal, inspired attendees with his session on “Careers in Mathematics,” providing valuable guidance on opportunities for higher education, scholarships, and global fellowships. Concluding the sessions, Mr. Priya Ranjan Mallick delivered a heart warming talk on the life and achievements of Srinivasa Ramanujan, highlighting his extraordinary contributions to mathematics and the importance of perseverance. These sessions left the audience inspired to delve deeper into mathematical concepts and understand their transformative role in shaping the modern world. Closing Ceremony: The event concluded with a valedictory session, presided over by Dr. P.Y. Dhekne, Professor of Mining Engineering, Dr. Debasisha Mishra, Head of the Department of Mathematics, and Dr. Sharada Nandan Raw, Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics.
